INTRODUCTION

In addition to soft tissue surgery treatment and laser teeth whitening, laser is also helpful in the field of pain relief and biostimulation. Since radiation emitted by low-power lasers has shown analgesic, anti-inflammatory and healing properties, they have been widely used in the process of tissue repair, for their wavelength and low densities of energy can penetrate tissues.

Therapeutic lasers do not have a direct healing effect. However, they act as an important pain-relieving agent providing the body with a better inflammatory response, as they help to reduce edema and minimize pain, in addition to promoting tissue repair of the injured region quite effectively through cellular biostimulation.

Laser therapy, when used in tissues and cells, is not based on heating, that is, the energy of the absorbed photons is not transformed into heat, but into photochemical, photophysical and/or photobiological effects. When laser light interacts with cells and tissues in an appropriate dosage, certain cell functions can be stimulated, among them are stimulation of lymphocytes, mast cell activation, increase of mitochondrial ATP production and proliferation of several types of cells, thus promoting anti-inflammatory effects. For example, 810nm laser light can effectively be absorbed by the enzyme in the cell to produce more ATP, which is the energy source for body cell dynamics. 980nm laser light can greatly increase the blood flow in both micro and macro vein system to help accelerating the exchange of the treatment body.

Laser penetration into tissue

In dentistry, we use these laser principles to accelerate postoperative healing and achieve pain relief effect by using an unfocused beam with low energy. This treatment is also called LLLT (Low Level Laser Therapy).
